    Uveitis is certainly treatable and in most cases it is curable. However, there are certain causes of uveitis (such as autoimmune disease) that may require ongoing treatment since uveitis may recur if treatment is stopped. Prompt consultation with an ophthalmologist is recommended for all new cases of uveitis. Treatments vary depending on the cause. For example: • Uveitis that is not due to infection – This may develop without a clear cause and without affecting other parts of the body. Treatment often includes corticosteroid medication (by eye drops, pill, eye implant or injection) with a high cure rate. Other immunosuppressive medications may be recommended for severe cases. • Infectious uveitis – This is generally curable once the cause (such as herpes virus, syphilis or Lyme disease) is identified and appropriate treatment is provided. However, treatment will not necessarily prevent or reverse damage to the uvea or prevent other complications that began prior to treatment. • Uveitis associated with systemic (bodywide) autoimmune disease – A good example is Behcet’s disease. Corticosteroids and infliximab treatment may lead to prompt resolution of the uveitis. However, re-treatment may be needed if uveitis recurs after the medication is reduced or stopped.
