Gorillaz in phase 1 feel very at home in the early 2000s. Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory, and Johny Bravo all rocked the specific, thick-lined, angular, flat shaded style, and the Gorillaz followed suit. Many have pointed out how this style feels like a throwback to 50s UPA animation, and the Gorillaz use similar animation methods as well.

Here is my collection of every released piece of Jamie Hewlett's Gorillaz art in its highest complete digital quality, arranged in estimated creation order. Also included is my spreadsheet of known release dates/metadata dates and original filenames for each image, with sources for the artwork's first public release.

Since most of the hype of Gorillaz’ debut album had passed, art from this era kind of slowed down to a near-halt. This makes a lot of the changes far more noticeable as there’s less of a steady evolution here.

Gorillaz, the brainchild of musician Damon Albarn and visual artist Jamie Hewlett is made up of four fictional band members with their own peculiar personalities and style, living in an incredibly detailed world. The lively cartoons soon captured, and still do, the imaginations of their many fans.

What I find the most fascinating is how the style of each phase reflects the sound of the band's music at the time.

Nov 12, 2023 · "Phase 4" HAD an art style. Earlier art from before around the Humanz release used a very unique cut-out collage style. Lots of visual filters, placing the Gorillaz faces on real human bodies (A La the Charger Telekom ad). Colours contrast between the vibrant and murky. Lots of modern, urban landscapes too.
