Jun 5, 2014 · To save weight there, Ford is experimenting with aluminum and magnesium transmission parts and hollow steel crankshafts. I'm no engineer but a hollow steel crankshaft seems almost counter-intuitive to me. Ford seems willing to expose itself to gobs numbers of recalls and risk its reputation in pursuit of innovation.
