The South Poll Breed started in the late 1980's and are a cross between Red Angus, Hereford, Senepol, and Barzona. They have been selected over the years to fit the needs of raising cattle in a grass-based system in the hot, humid Southeast US.

The South Poll breed was developed by Teddy Gentry in the 1980’s to be a heat tolerant, slick haired animal that can handle the heat of the south and still perform. With their small frame, they’re more efficient in transferring energy into beef, which allows farmers to run more head per acre versus larger, conventional breeds.

The South Poll, a maternal composite combining four maternal breeds: Angus, Hereford, Senepol, and Barzona, is a moderate framed, slick haired cow designed for hot, humid environments.

The foundation of the South Poll was built on the very best purebred cattle from each individual breed (the ones that calve year after year with a calving interval of less than 365 days). The South Poll Association and breeders will try to never lose sight of the big picture.
