In 2020, after the updates to the urban-rural classification, this estimate increased by 114,914 to 766,272. The percentage of the population in Arizona living in rural areas changed from 10.2% in 2010 to 10.7% in 2020.

In Apache County, 37,000 people rely on AHCCCS, which comes to 56% of the residents. Some 5,200 have lost coverage in the past year.
