    Causes

    Verified Expert

    • Atherosclerosis or build-up of cholesterol in the walls of arteries is the main cause of PAD. Cholesterol deposition in the arteries supplying blood to the limbs reduces blood supply to the affected limbs. Other causes that may lead to PAD include:
    • High Blood pressure and high cholesterol levels
    • Blood vessel inflammation
    • Diabetes
    • Obesity
    • Age - advance age may increase the risk
    • Family history
    • Injury to limbs that damage the arteries
    • Abnormalities of the ligaments or muscles in the legs
    • Exposure to radiation
    • Smoking

    Symptoms

    Verified Expert
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms.

Many people with PAD may not present with any symptoms, while others may have mild symptoms.

Some of the symptoms noted during PAD include:

    • Claudication or leg pain while walking or during activity that disappears after rest
    • Painful cramping in the hip, thigh, or calf muscles
    • Weakness or numbness, tingling, or feeling of pins and needles in the lower legs or feet
    • Coldness in the lower leg or foot
    • Sores on the legs, feet, or toes that do not heal
    • Change in colour of the legs
    • Loss of hair or slow growing hair on the legs and feet
    • Slow growing toenails
    • Shiny skin on the legs
    • Weak pulse or no pulse in the legs or feet

    Treatment

    Verified Expert

Treatment aims at managing the symptoms and preventing progression of atherosclerosis. Lifestyle changes are the primary treatment options, followed by medications and surgical procedures.

    Medication

Statins: Drugs to reduce blood cholesterol levels.

    Atorvastatin . Fluvastatin

Antihypertensives: To manage high blood pressure.

    Chlorothiazide . Chlorthalidone

Antidiabetics: Help control blood sugar levels.

    Glimepiride/Pioglitazone

Blood thinners: To prevent blood clots.

    Apixaban . Dabigatran

Symptom-relief medications: To improve blood flow to the limbs.

    Cilostazol

Thrombolytics: Clot dissolving drugs are injected into the artery at the site of the block.

    Streptokinase

    Diagnosis

    Verified Expert
One or more of these tests may be recommended by your medical provider.
A detailed medical history is obtained from the patient and the doctor may conduct specific tests to confirm diagnosis of PAD.

    Common tests & procedures

Physical examination: Check for signs of PAD such as pulsation in the leg or decreased pulsation in the affected limb and poor wound healing.

Ankle-brachial index: Obtaining and comparing the blood pressures in the ankle and arm.

Doppler ultrasound: To assess blood flow through the arteries in the affected limbs.

Angiogram: Viewing blood flow through the arteries by injecting a dye into the blood vessels and obtaining a series of images.

Catheter-based angiography: Guiding a catheter through an artery in the groin and injecting the dye to obtain images of the affected area.

Blood test: To measure the blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels.

  1. Peripheral artery disease
    • According to 3 sources
Peripheral artery disease, or PAD, is an accumulation of plaque (fats and cholesterol) in the arteries in your legs or arms. This makes it harder for your blood to carry oxygen and nutrients to the tissues in those areas. PAD is a long-term disease, but you can improve it by exercising, eating less fat and giving up tobacco products.
Peripheral artery disease is similar to coronary artery disease. Peripheral artery disease, or PAD, is a narrowing of the inside of the peripheral arteries that carry blood away from the heart to other parts of the body. The most common type is lower-extremity PAD, in which blood flow is reduced to the legs and feet.
What is PAD? Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a chronic condition where plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to your legs. “Plaque” is a sticky substance made of fat and cholesterol. Over time, this plaque can gradually narrow the arteries. If it progresses, blood flow in that artery can become partially or completely blocked.
