Jun 20, 2023 · I have a very positive experience buying ~3-5 year old refurbished (rating is up to you, I look for certified refurbished) Lenovo ThinkPad T4xx or T5xx on eBay (I'm partial to numeric keypads). You can find lots of options for < $500 or so, depending on your selection criteria. You can always put in a new SSD and more memory.

Mar 10, 2021 · I cant afford a new Thinkpad and old ones are affordable. With old Thinkpads some are upgradeable and who doesn't like to upgrade their tech. Plus where else can you find a firewire port, 5 usb A ports, full size HDMI and a modem jack lol.

But for most users who just want a good ThinkPad, buying used isn't as great of an idea as it was. In a few years, buying used will become more attractive again, once the AMD Ryzen 4000 models enter the used market en masse.

Apr 25, 2022 · Moving back to a normal trackpad and bringing back some of the Magnesium that made the old thinkpads good. I have an X1 Carbon Gen3, and X1 Yoga Gen 3, and an X1 Carbon Gen 9. Obviously the gen 9 hasn't been in service long enough to be tested for longevity but the Gen 3 has seen some things and it still feels like new.
Are modern ThinkPads worth it? And if not, which other brands are?
I like ThinkPad because its keyboard. Some modern ones have ridiculous Nav clusters, especially shrunk arrow keys. I would prefer an old Dell e6410 than modern ones; which is extremely slow, hot, and heavy. 2018 is the big year for ThinkPad, probably the most sophisticated version. But still X280 and X1 Yoga 3th gen are questionable.

Mar 17, 2021 · Although easily fully upgradeable to meet modern Thinkpad performance specs, it isn't financially viable as used parts for these are somewhat still expensive and makes the T440p cost about the same as just buying a newer, slimmer, lighter, and imo, nicer looking modern Thinkpad such as the X1 Carbon, T480, T480s, or T490 outright.

Jan 2, 2022 · I’ve used a T450s for daily tasks for about 4 months. I’ve just upgraded to a T480s and I think it’s a huge improvement. The CPU in the t450 is getting quite old. Integrated graphics don’t support commonly used video codecs so expect seeing heavy CPU load while watching YouTube etc. The battery life will also suffer because of that.
