Mr. Eko could've been the one to reveal Smokey's identity because he knew the REAL John Locke more than most. And the way Smokey acted, Eko would've been suspicious right from the start. That would've made for a tense conflict.

If I recall correctly Eko would be the one who would be constantly saving Charlie from death, and later helped him to accept his death and move on. They however cast Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and renamed him Mr. Eko. He played a big role in season 2 and was killed off in early season 3.
