If you have allergies that are sparked by odors and such, I would recommend the use of a Aladdin lamp as opposed to the hurricane style lamps. Aladdins burn very clean (hot white and blue flame) and are essentially odorless. Whereas, hurricane lamps are inefficient burners.

The base is about 3/5 full, which is to say about 3 inches of oil in the base, and 2 inches of air. The bottom 2" of the wick is submerged. There is plenty of air.

May 10, 2006 · The regular kerosene is a LOT cheaper than those fancy bottled lamp oils. I'm like you, they stink... You can also buy 100% parrafin oil. I've used it for years because I hate that smell, too. Parrafin oil has no smell. My wal mart carries it in the candle section or Lehmans sellls it in large containers.
