Present-day Westchester, Bronx, New York, Richmond, Kings, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk counties were part of York Shire from 1664-August 1673 and again from February 1674 until 1683 at which point the Province of New York was divided into counties.

Above is one of the early acts passed by the colony’s assembly and approved by English colonial governor, Colonel Thomas Dongan, establishing county divisions and outlining governance laws. Titled “An Act to divide the province & dependences into shires and Countyes,” it was enacted on November 1, 1683.

Kings County was formed November 1st, 1683, as one of the twelve original counties of New York State. The Borough of Brooklyn is identical to Kings County in terms of geographical area, and is one of the five boroughs that have comprised New York City since its consolidation in 1898.
