CoreXY provides a fundamental building block of many computerized fabrication tools - cartesian motion - in a simple and adaptable format. CoreXY is a technique, not an implementation. We sketch the concept and give a few examples as a platform that enables you to build new tools that are as unique as your ideas.

Principle of Operation. This is a standard drafting table. The horizontal bar is a straight-edge which can be moved up and down by the user. The criss-cross pattern of the cables stabilizes the bar and keeps it horizontal.

CoreXY: Waterjet Aluminum Revision 1. This is the first version of CoreXY designed with precision guides to allow it to position accurately under load. Owing to the tools readily available at MIT, it was built from a single sheet of aluminum plate that was cut on a waterjet.

A flexible fabric-based implementation of CoreXY. This design can scale to cover an entire wall, and might also be able to conform to certain curved surfaces. Structure is obtained by stretching Bot-of-the-Cloth across a large table.

The goal was to create a machine that could be used to plot large clothing patterns on sheets of fabric as a way of making it easier to share clothing designs online. The CoreXY mechanism made it possible to construct the plotter using fabric.

CoreXY was conceived of as an independent project, owing to the author's initial ignorance of the subject. However a growing list of prior art is being unearthed which shares interesting similarities to and differences from the mechanism proposed here.
