The essay’s score should reflect an evaluation of the essay as a whole. Students had only 15 minutes to read the sources and 40 minutes to write; the essay, therefore, is not a finished product and should not be

AP English Language and Composition 9-point Rubric 9 Essays earning a score of 9 meet the criteria for 8 papers and, in addition, are especially full or apt in their analysis or demonstrate particularly impressive control of language.
Responds to the prompt with a thesis that presents a defensible position. Simply restates thesis (if present), repeats provided information, or references fewer than two of the provided sources. Provides evidence from or references at least two of the provided sources.
These well-written essays clearly demonstrate an understanding of the topic and have chosen an appropriate work of literature and appropriate element(s) (character, theme, tone, plot device, etc.) within that work. They address the topic convincingly with apt references.
