What happens is a program will look at the depth map pixel by pixel. Each RGB pixel has a separate value for each colour that ranges from 0 to 255.

Hold it up just below your line of sight. You will see two fingers, the one your left eye sees and the one your right eye sees. Then try focusing on something a little closer, but still farther than your finger, and you will still see two fingers but they'll be closer to each other.
