Jan 27, 2005 · For a starter, I highly recommend buying Doug Thompson's book, "Mount Whitney: Mountain Lore From the Whitney Store." There are two major camping areas on the main trail, Outpost Camp at 10,360 ft. and 3.8 miles in; and Trail Camp at 12,039 ft. and 6.3 miles in. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

The Whitney Portal Store, located 13 miles west of Lone Pine, lies next to the Mount Whitney trail head and has operated by permit from the Inyo National Forest since 1987. At the store, we keep last minute supplies for hiking, camping, fishing, and related items for the portal visitors.

It is among the red-brownish mountains at the top of the diagram, on the diagram showing "Helen," which is Mount Helen, 7162 ft, 52.7 compass degrees True North, at "106" miles from Mt. Whitney. "Helen" is a yellowish mountain in the foreground of the redish-brown mountains.

We are going to be at the ranger station before 11 on Saturday and hopefully get wilderness permits to enter through the Cottonwood lakes trail on Sunday and get a trail crest exit permit for Thursday (5 days, four nights backpacking).
