Many professional writers used it in that era, and given their notorious conservatism regarding tools used for their writing, some are still using it to this day.

But you can sometimes find a copy of WordStar on DOS software archive websites; you can run WordStar 4.0 using FreeDOS in a virtual machine or in a DOSBox window. In fact, a few writers still use WordStar 4.0 for DOS because it presents a minimal, distraction free writing environment.

WordStar was a small, neat and efficient way of creating files that you mostly needed on your computer, rather than printed off, maybe. I can use STRIP.EXE to strip off the high bit, if I need to import the file as .txt, into a Windows programme like Word.

Starting with WordStar 4.0, the program was built on new code written principally by Peter Mierau. WordStar dominated the market in the early and mid-1980s, succeeding the market leader Electric Pencil.

Aug 17, 2018 · My first PC was a Leading Edge Model M that my dad got from a local print shop. It came with a green mono display that had the WordStar 4.0 function menus burned into it. I remember reading them with a flashlight when the monitor was turned off. The keyboard also had a WordStar function key reference sticker still attached.
