Jan 26, 2023 · What are Wild Tomatoes? Known to botanists as Solanum pimpinellifolium or quaintly “pimp,” wild tomato plants are the ancestors of all the tomatoes we eat today. They still grow wild in northern Peru and southern Ecuador.

Wild tomatoes that are more distantly related to domesticated tomato have green fruits when ripe. Their fruits also tend to be firmer, but are still somewhat sweet. The fruit of S. chilense , for example, are lightly hairy and green striped when ripe.

S. pimpinellifolium is one of several wild species that have colored (rather than mostly green) fruits when ripe. Of the closest relatives of domesticated tomato (all of which all have colored fruits) it is the most diverse, with a broad distribution throughout lowland Ecuador and coastal Peru (see Ecology).

Here we have shown that there is substantial diversity in the structure and chemical composition of the fruit cuticles of wild tomato species. Furthermore, despite the diversity, we have shown that the traits identified may be relatively simple in their genetic bases.

The wild tomato (Solanum pimpinellifolium) is a different species than the standard tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Wild tomatoes produce many hands/bunches of tiny fruit on very large, sprawling plants that live up to their name. Wild tomato is a good option for hot, humid conditions.
