Apparently the psychoacoustical model of MP3 does not capture well what the ear catches onto in this case (Vorbis behaves more in line with expectations regarding the relation of audible quality and bit rate for this kind of source). And microphoning is already problematic as well.

I'm not sure anyone has bothered to go for "near transparency" at that sort of quality, as it doesn't really have a use case - you master everything using the best quality you can, then you deliver in whatever the appropriate output may be. Highest quality mp3 or vorbis are considered to be good enough that humans don't hear issues with them.

Even my old Rockboxed iRiver and my car (via A2DP) merrily decode AACs with higher quality and lower file sizes.

If your square wave generator is poorly-written, it will produce an infinite number of harmonics, which are aliased and sound bad.
