We could use the 1st class upgrade for £10 each way and it would still cost us several pounds less than a standard ticket on the day.

I hate Virgin first class...much prefer standard. I travelled Virgin first class from Glasgow to Wakefield in August and it was the worst train experience i've ever had. Travelled standard on the way back, and I was so much more comfortable. I found the legroom in first class to be more cramped than standard.
