Kumeyaay History - Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians
The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, one of the remaining 12 bands of the Kumeyaay Indian Nation, resides on a 1,600-acre reservation in the Viejas Valley, east of the community of Alpine in San Diego County, California.
Viejas Government - Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians
The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians is a sovereign government recognized by the United States government. Tribal governments are autonomous entities that conduct responsibilities of that of many governing bodies, with such structures as executive, legislative, and judicial branches.

The Viejas Band is one of 12 Kumeyaay bands. Traditionally, the Kumeyaays depended upon the land for their subsistence, not only gathering the area’s native plants and hunting wild game, but also farming within a complex system of agricultural landholdings.

The Viejas band continues to share a joint-trust patent with the Barona Band for the 15,000 remaining acres of the Capitan Grande Reservation. Today, the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians works to maintain their culture and sovereignty, and owns and operates Viejas Casino & Resort, Viejas Outlets, and Ma-Tar-Awa Recreational Vehicle Park.
