Commencing 24 April 1965, Joseph Strauss, together with Ernest G. Small (DDR-838), was part of the first advanced SAR/AAW picket team in the Gulf of Tonkin to support U.S. air strike operations against North Vietnam.

I was a 17 year old Vietnamese girl who was fleeing Vietnam in July 1980. 48 people were on the boat, but 5 children died after 13 days lost at sea. Our boat was rescued by the brave men of the USS Joseph Strauss DDG-16 and I am forever grateful.
