Its rivers, streams and wildlife sanctuaries host millions of waterfowl, Tule elk, turtles, cranes, deer and many other species that call the San Joaquin Valley home. California’s productive farmland and important wildlife areas both need reliable water supplies.

Rafts of ducks and geese on our lakes and reservoirs also often contain flocks of White-fronted Geese. In fact, identifying the various species of waterfowl among large groupings is one of the greater pleasures of birding that also offers a convenient opportunity to learn more birds.

The Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys differ substantially in the amount and types of habitat provided for waterfowl. Riparian forests, semi-permanent tule marshes, and grasslands historically dominated the Sacramento Valley.

Great blue herons, songbirds, and waterfowl also use the site. Black-tailed hares, beaver, raccoon, and other mammals have been observed, and a fairly large population of western fence lizards lives on the site. Fish species common to the local waters include carp, suckers, white catfish, and others.
