Mar 20, 2021 · Hey y'all, first time posting on here. I wanted to reach out for advice on how to deal with my toxic leadership. BACKSTORY: I have been in the Navy, 8+ years. I am currently on my third ship (first big deck), I am becoming an LPO for the first time in a few days. I am ready to step up to the plate and take care of my sailors.

The greatest problem with toxic leadership, imo, is there was never a definition/description of it in any of the 1-02s. It was a nebulous term for fucked up things leadership did. Now, anyone with APD can look it up and see if what their leadership is doing is counterproductive.

In my experience toxic leadership consists of leaders that will sacrifice people to make themselves look better. If there is an issue that arises they are the ones to point there finger and assign blame rather than come up with workable solutions to the problem.

Toxic leaders are usually toxic people. It's a behavioral pattern just as much as a way of leadership. The ones I've known used a lot of anger and coercion to accomplish tasks. Most often when it's not remotely necessary. Toxic leaders fly under the radar for a long time because they appear to get results; mostly short term.
