Dec 7, 2020 · It is fairly clear how the middle and upper classes wore their hair. The picture below shows the main styles for women and men. Women wore their hair in elaborate updos called nihongami, which translates literally into “Japanese hair.” Men wore hair in a chronmage, or topknot. The in-style nihonhami of the Edo period was the shimada.

Given the uniqueness of the style in modern times, the Japan Sumo Association employs specialist hairdressers called tokoyama to cut and prepare sumo wrestlers' hair. The sumo style of the chonmage is slightly different, in that the pate is no longer shaved.

The mainstream female hairstyles were long and narrow hairstyles such as Tatehyogo, Genrokushimada, and Genrokukatsuyama. The popular styles of tabo (back part) were the ones the form of which protruded backward such as Kamome-zuto (women's hairstyle similar to the gull's tail) and Sekirei-tabo (women's hairstyle similar to the wagtail's tail).

Chigomage (also pronounced "chigowage") is a form of hair which was worn by boys from the Heian period to the Azuchi-Momoyama period, and also the similar hairstyle for girls which dates from the Edo period. It is also called Chigowa, Karawa, and Karakomage.
