Transverse Magnetic (TM) and Transverse Electric (TE) modes
If the two sets of equations are independent of each other, you only have to consider three equations and three variables at a time. You are free to work on solving the TE mode quantities without regard for the values of the TM quantities. The same goes for the TM quantities, you can solve for them without regard for the TE values.
