Tavistock Square was developed in the 1820s by the builder Thomas Cubitt on the estate owned by the Dukes of Bedford. The name derives from the courtesy title, Marquess of Tavistock, given to the eldest sons of the Dukes of Bedford.

Located near Euston station, the square is very easy to find. The centrepiece is a statue of Mahatma Ghandi and throughout the gardens are other features dedicated to peace. Tavistock Square also gained notoriety as being the site of one of four terrorist attacks in 2005.

Tavistock Sq, the 'square of peace', contains a statue of Mahatma Gandhi, a memorial to wartime conscientious objectors and a cherry tree recalling the WWII bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was the scene of one of the four suicide bombings in central London in July 2005.
