Multidetector computed tomography, cone beam volume computed tomography (CBVCT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are all used for advanced imaging for some indications (Table 4.1). Plain films, including panoramic views, remain a standard and reasonable starting point for the study of the TMJ.

Malignant tumours of the temporomandibular joint (MTTMJ) are extremely rare. Studies describing its unique epidemiology, clinicopathological features, treatment and prognosis comprehensively are limited. To address these issues, current investigation was performed.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most valuable and extensively utilized imaging technique for assessing the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). In comparison to computed tomography (CT) and arthrography, MRI offers superior tissue contrast, enabling clear visualization of soft tissues and other articular structures within the TMJ.

At MRI, ameloblastoma has mixed signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted images: typically overall low signal intensity on T1-weighted images and high signal intensity on T2-weighted images. If TMJ is suspected, your dentist may also order X-rays, and more uncommonly, a CT scan or an MRI to assess bone and cartilage erosion or misalignment, or problems in the jaw’s soft tissue. In some cases, a TMJ arthroscopy is necessary to view the jaw joint space to help with correct diagnosis.
