Switch BackPlane - Cisco Learning Network
On the Supervisor Engine 720 (SUP720) there are two processors, one is the Route Processor and the other is the Switch Processor, both of them reside on the Multilayer Switch Feature Card, those processors handle the traffic in different ways, the SP handles the L2 functions and the RP handles the L3 functions, all that would make the overall ...
Switching capacity - Cisco Learning Network
"how are we going to look at a switch backplane bandwidth is enough? Obviously, through the method of estimation is of no use, I think it should be considered from two aspects: 1) the capacity of all ports X number of ports and 2 times should be less than backplane bandwidth, non-blocking switching enables full-duplex, that the switch has the ...
switch port change and non-blocking architecture - Cisco Learning …
i thought that if a switch e.g. 24port gigabit has a backplane of 48gbit its non-blocking, as the 24 ports full duplex the total bandwidth would equal to 48gbit so the backplane can handle all ports full duplex without blocking or dropping anything. is that correct, or does the keyword "non-blocking" includes more than this? thanks for the help!
Where are route processor and switch fabric (backplane) physically ...
The switch fabric allows forwarding of forms from one line card to another or from one port asic group to another. In the Nexus switch platform the fabric is built using fabric modules or Fabs for short.

You're absoloutely right, there is zero backplane comms between VDCs. You need a 10Gb SFP (if running 10Gb) or whatever you're using, which opens you to questions of cost. But in any design on 7Ks intra VDC connections are via seperate hardware links.

What is criteria for choosing catalyst switches of L232 model
So, forwarding bandwidth, is the maximum amount of data that you can send in OR out of the switch interfaces. so with 48 x 1Gbps interfaces, plus 2 Gb SFP interfaces, thats 50Gbs. Switching bandwidth is the full duplex backplane bandwidth of the switch which would be 2 x Forwarding bandwidth so in this case 100Gb. Cheers

Access Switch Stacking: When stacking switches the first switch is considered the supervisor and the rest are comparable to line cards. Stacking cables are used to join or interconnect switches to form a backplane as in 4500 and 6500 series switches. NEXUS L2/L3 Data Center devices: 5596UP and 2248TP Fabric Extender or FEX

A router or L3 switch has an RP (Route Processor), which handles things like building the routing table. It's also capable of forwarding packets. When a packet is handed to the RP (punted to the CPU), this is known as Centralised Forwarding Architecture. This is the model used by software routers, as well as routers with CEF disabled.
