I have bred 2 smaller horses under 14 hands and have had a large foal and a horse that the parents were under 14 hands and the baby grew to 15.3 I also have a sport horse out of 13.2 hand mare 16 hand sire and the filly may mature to 15.1.

Aug 8, 2011 · Breeding your own horse I do have to agree that buying/adopting a horse is the best option here, OP. My reasons are more financial than anything else. Reason? 1. stud fee 2. Vet fees for the almost year of gestation 3. the three year waiting time where you can do nothing but ground work a baby.

If he does really well you would be ahead of the game in the breeding business. Especially since it would take at least 3 or 4 years before you start seein how well most of his offspring do.

Even living with a stallion full time, a mare will not necessarily foal every year. BTW, the stallion is far more likely than the mare to get injured.

In my opinion I think that is kind of cruel to breed a Giant Friesian to a small POA mare. It is fine to breed a 14 hands QH Mare to a 15 hands QH Stallion. By the way what breed is your 15 hands mare and the 18 hands stallion?
