    Why was Stow Minster built?
    Stow Minster was supposedly founded by St Etheldreda after she fled from her marriage to King Egfrith in 660. She had chosen to be a nun rather than a wife, and went on to found Ely Cathedral. As she passed through Stow, she stuck her staff in the ground, and it grew into an ash tree. A church was built to commemorate the miracle.

    Why did Remigius make Stow a Benedictine monastery?
    After Remigius had moved his cathedral to Lincoln, he decided to make Stow into a Benedictine monastery by transferring monks from Eynsham Abbey near Oxford. This was done the year before he died, but his successor quickly moved them back again, and Stow became a simple parish church.
