The use of a hyphen is a stylistic choice but due to the nature of "sq. ft." being two words the options are rather limited: 1000 sq. ft. 1000 square-foot. "1.65-million square feet", "1.65-million-square feet", "1.65-million-square-feet" or some other combination. Either way you should do none of those. As you can see from this, "square feet" is rarely, or in fact almost never hyphenated.

I'm just interested why a superscript 'x' should be used as an abbreviation for 'yards', how common it was, and when (if ever) it fell out of regular use.
