The Spanish Barb Horse is CRITICALLY RARE and in great need of preservation. In fact, the Spanish barb Horses are listed as CRITICAL on the Conservation Priority List of the Livestock Conservancy and by the Equus Survival Trust.

The breed standard for the Spanish Barb is the tool used to evaluate horses by which the individuals of the breed are judged for type (Spanish characteristics) and conformation. The standard also serves as a basis of comparison by which horses are measured for acceptance within the Registry.

Throughout the six centuries the Spanish Barb has survived in North America, the valuable traits and abilities first established in the breed have remained intact. However, these ancient bloodlines were very nearly annihilated during the 19th century.
