Sep 11, 2012 · “Diamond pattern” checkered stocks were used until 1968. In 1990, with the Model 17-6, a full underlug barrel was introduced and became standard. The 8 3/8”-barreled version was dropped from production in 1993. The final Model 17-7 was discontinued in 1996 in favor of a 10-shot alloy cylinder version, the 17-8, which was made until late 1999.

Jun 24, 2018 · Smith & Wesson utterly destroyed the aesthetic beauty of the K-22 Masterpiece Model 17 when they added the obnoxious full underlug to it in 1990 (17-6). There. Got that off my chest. Now to your real question: I have never known a K-22 that wasn't a wonderful gun, and I've owned them from the 1940s, 1950s and 1970s.

May 17, 2021 · The Model 18-4 was discontinued when S&W opted to produce the Model 17-5 and 17-6 in both 6" and 4" barrel lengths instead. Also the 6 shot Model 18 and 17 were reintroduced in the new "Classic series" with IL and MIM parts and are instead based on a new style frame instead of the older "Heavy Masterpiece Model 17 frame.

Apr 30, 2021 · The Model 17 didn't appear until 1958. In June, 1957, S&W assigned model numbers to each of its handguns. Prior to that, they had model names, not model numbers.

May 19, 2018 · The 17 is a 6” and the 18 is a 4” that is the only difference. I never really found the need for a model 18 other than I like the looks of a 4” barrels. I recently purchased an 18-3 and it is my new favorite. It is just as accurate as my 17. Both my 17 have target stocks, standard hammer and standard trigger.

I already have a 17-4 and a pre-17 in 6" and a 17-3 in 8 3/8", so I resisted initially. I figured my 17-4 was close enough, but it does not have the 3Ts. Jul 24, 2012 · I can see why it would be difficult to provide info in a forum post to address the Model 17 (and Pre-Model 17). I saw a K22 (5 screw), 1955 vintage on a gun auction forum. It's at $655 now, but will increase during the remainder of the auction.
