The Preliminary Single Subject Credential Program (SSCP) at CSULB prepares candidates to teach the specific subject(s) named on the credential in departmentalized schools. This is commonly done in California high schools, junior high and middle schools.

Applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements for the Five-Year Preliminary Teaching Credential: Complete a baccalaureate or higher degree, except in professional education, from a regionally accredited college or university. Achieve a passing score on the appropriate subject-matter examination (s).

Online Single Subject Teaching Credential. The Single Subject Credential authorizes teaching in one subject area of the curriculum. This credential is required for almost all high school and middle school positions and for a few elementary “specialist” positions.

During your first term, you’ll build your foundation with two introductory teaching courses, while proving your subject matter competency. From there, you’ll expand your classroom strategies, employing the latest learning theory and meeting Common Core standards.

The Master of Arts in Teaching – Single Subject (Middle or High School) online program will equip you with the theories, principles, and skills to earn your credential to teach in middle and upper school classrooms.

The Single Subject Credential Program at the graduate level can be completed either on campus or online. It can be completed as a non-degree program or as part of a master's degree.
