Silymarin is a standardized milk thistle seed extract containing a mixture of Flavonolignans (Silybum Marianum). This medication is a herbal supplement that allows the liver function to be detoxified and preserved.

Silymarin is used in the treatment of Chronic liver disease and Liver cirrhosis. How Silymarin works Silymarin is obtained from milk thistle seeds (Silybum marianum). It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that protect liver cells from harmful effects of toxic chemicals (called free radicals) as well as some other medicines.

Silymarin is believed to protect the liver by stabilising cell membranes, thereby inhibiting the entry of various toxins into liver cells. It may also promote hepatocyte growth and prevent oxidation and inflammation in the liver.
