The Second Class rank is an important milestone on a Scout’s journey. To earn Second Class, Scouts build on skills learned in Scout and Tenderfoot ranks, working toward greater independence in outdoor skills, leadership, and service. This rank covers a wide range of topics, from basic first aid to camping, navigation, and swimming skills.

Notes: The requirements for Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks may be worked on simultaneously; however, these ranks must be earned in sequence. Alternative requirements for the Scout rank are available for Scouts with physical or mental disabilities if they meet the criteria listed in the Scouts BSA Requirements book.

For Scouts preparing to rank up to Second Class, you’re in the right place! In this guide, I’ll be providing you with all of the info that you’ll need to answer each of the BSA’s Second Class rank requirements. Along the way, you’ll learn foundational Scouting skills and gain confidence!

Second Class Rank Requirements: Since joining Scouts BSA, participate in five separate troop/patrol activities, at least three of which must be held outdoors. Of the outdoor activities, at least two must include overnight camping. These activities do not include troop or patrol meetings.

Tenderfoot, [2] Second Class, [3] and First Class [4] have progressively harder requirements in the areas of Scoutcraft, physical fitness, citizenship, personal growth and Scout Spirit.

Using a compass and map together, take a 5-mile hike (or 10 miles by bike) approved by your adult leader and your parent or guardian. If you use a wheelchair or crutches, or if it is difficult for you to get around, you may substitute "trip" for "hike" in this requirement.
