There is also a victorinox knife with a 3" blade curved forward with a rounded tip that works beautifully to come up and under to skin around the antler burrs quickly and easily. To flesh the cape or other hides I use an ulu knife - 4"curved blade fleshes fast, and is easy on the wrist.

Nov 9, 2007 · I am with Pyeager1. Single edged razor blade. I can practically shave myself holding the blade only in my hand. Let me see you guys do that with a #22. Mar 10, 2024 · I use a scalpel and it's more slicing thin layers off than scraping. It takes some time to get the feel if how deep you can cut. The blade has to be sharp. You can support the skin from the hair side with your hand, a block of wood, tapered dowel, etc. The type of animal will certainly dictate how much will need to be shaved off.

Nov 17, 2008 · The number represents the size of blade. The SC and NS blades will give you the longest edge life. Also, if you get 22xt (extra thick) blades the tip is blunted to help prevent puncturing the hide. Jun 30, 2009 · From there on I suggest you skin with a NEW scalpel blade. Slice/shave the skin from the meat. I remove the body in 3 chunks. I leave a LOT of meat on the skin intentionally. After the 3 chunks are removed I use the scalpel to SHAVE to meat off of the skin. I do NO "scraping." Crappies used to be a nightmare for me because of scale loss.

Jan 26, 2007 · Try using a scalpel with a fresh blade to scrape. Otherwise snip off the strings of connective tissue. Also make sure you squeeze off the water from the skin by laying it show side up on a smooth hard surface and running the dull edge of a filleting knife from head to tail. This is just before you mount the skin.

Jul 24, 2018 · I open them a little with a scalpel, sprinkle a little borax on them, then insert my thumb and pull the skin toward me, forcing my thumb almost to the tip of the ear. I can open one in a few seconds. As tomdes said, you can then invert the ear over something and continue to open to the edges. It just takes practice.
