WEBDec 3, 2021 · For a SF 85, you won't be called for an interview as most sf 85s stay with the FSO or adjudicator. Investigation happens when you fill out a sf 85p and sf 86 depending on how complex your background is. For sf 85 is mostly used to make sure you pass the basics in a background check, nothing illegal (recently) or defaulted on any loans.

Should I expect all my references to be contacted and thoroughly questioned, and my credit history to be pulled, etc., or are such things less common for positions that don’t require clearance?

I am currently employed in the private sector and this will be my first federal job. I understand from reading here that my current supervisor will be contacted and there is no way around that.
