California has very low humidity. Also they are very sensitive to dry winds. You would need to keep in heated environment for winter.

I've grown both and my pulasan even survived a winter outside. Not the two cold winters two years ago but more like 4 years ago. I bought two seedling rambutans from Excalibur about 5 years ago.

WEBJul 16, 2016 · The main problem with pulasan is that it is not as widely adapted for growing out of its range as the rambutan. When grown out of its rannge the pulasan is a lot slower growing, much more delicate, and not as consistent bearing. I have seen pulasans well loaded with fruits here, but that takes many years and some TLC.
