WEBMay 26, 2021 · A bowl backed mandolin still has a 'guitarish' character (ignoring the double coursing). There are pipa with resonance holes (some historical some modern). I don't think an alternative tuning would be enough to make a guiar sound like a pipa. As I understand it a modern pipa uses nylon strings wrapped in steel so they are similar to guitar strings.
