Grand Union Flag, American colonial banner first displayed by George Washington on Jan. 1, 1776. It showed the British Union Flag of 1606 in the canton. Its field consisted of seven red and six white alternated stripes representing the 13 colonies. The Stars and Stripes officially replaced it on June 14, 1777.
WHEN THE Second Continental Congress declared independence from Great Britain on July 4, 1776, it wasn’t the Stars and Stripes that was flying above Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, it was the Grand Union Flag. This lesser-known banner was certainly similar to America’s now-iconic flag. It featured 13 red and white stripes.
