Maybe dry this area up and place a small catch pan or card board under the feed rod collet to see if its leaking here. an oil leak from a single area can find its way to other areas. Sep 12, 2024. #5. I use a 50/50 mix of 30 wt and chainsaw bar oil. My lathe doesn't get used every day and is in a non heated/air conditioned shop. My lathe has an oil pump in the apron and has no problem pushing the oil through to the half dozen oil points. My concoction clings to the ways, etc much longer than anything else.

But when I ran it (no cutting, just watching it go round and round) gobs of oil was leaking from the head-stock oil seal.

Jul 19, 2012. #6. oil pump is off! without breaking or bending anything. whether you do this with oil pickup still in the way or not. it's best to TAKE OFF OIL PUMP COVER AND TAKE GEARS OUT FIRST! to slide the oil pump back off of the pickup tube. you need the oil pump shaft out and. it helps to have the gears out.

Sep 13, 2017. #1. I bought an Atlas H54 lathe that has babbit bearing in the headstock. I've been able to reduce the play in the spindle to about 0.001". When I fill the cups on top of the bearing the oil only lasts maybe 4 or 5 minutes at most. I've tried using a felt disc in the bottom of the cup and that slowed it a little but not much.

Feb 5, 2023 · I've got the headstock cleaned out, and the gearbox as well. I used mineral spirits in a Sureshot sprayer, some isopropyl, and some Oil Eater for the stained painted surfaces. I've cleaned all the fasteners and run a tap in all the threaded holes to clean out the muck.
