Notre-Dame's north tower (left) holds eight bells while the slightly smaller south tower (right) holds the two largest bells. There are 13 church bells in the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris; 10 main bells are mounted in the two main bell towers and 3 smaller bells in the sanctuary.

The largest bell of Notre-Dame is located in the south tower. In campanology, it is called a bourdon. It rings on major occasions such as Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, All Saints’ Day, and events like the death or election of the Pope. The bourdon of Notre-Dame was cast in 1683 and named Emmanuel by its godfather, Louis XIV.
