Jul 25, 2011 · You can use a hair straightening iron to seal mylar, and you can get them cheap for around £15. (probably $20 or so) i like the Ziplock mylar bags- but i heat seal them above the ziplock- the ziplock is for re-sealing after the bag has been cut open to keep the rest fresher for longer rather than just a big open bag.
Oven Canning Dry Food vs. Mylar Bags... Your Thoughts?
Jan 31, 2012 · I've been storing most of my bulk food in 1 gallon Mylar bags inside a 5 gallon bucket (4-5 bags normally). The cost of putting them in 1 quart Mason jars is not that much more (about $5ish for 5 Mylar bags and a bucket vs. $6 if I get generic brand canning jars or $10 if I get Ball). We all know we SHOULD rotate our food storage.

More importantly, if you were thinking of vacuuming the bags in addition to just using the heating bar to seal, just don't even think about it. First home food sealers can't create a strong enough vacuum.
