  1. To create a mulch pathway with stepping stones, you need to12:
    1. Plan your pathway and mark it out with string or spray paint.
    2. Mow the grass as short as possible and remove any debris, such as sticks or rocks, that may be in the way.
    3. Dig the holes for your stepping stones.
    4. Add a layer of sand to the bottom of each hole.
    5. Place the stepping stones in the holes.
    6. Open a bag of mulch and spread it to the top of your stones and the edging.
    7. Use the back side of your garden rake to smooth the mulch and eliminate any high or low spots.
    8. Repeat until you have filled your entire path.
    9. Spread the second color mulch on the outside of your path.
