In 1851 Mount Diablo was selected as the initial point for land surveys of Northern California and Nevada, with the Mount Diablo Base and Meridian Lines originating at its peak. Due to the mountain's variations in wind, rainfall, and temperature, it is also a preserve for a wide variety of plant and animal life.

Mount Diablo State Park At the eastern fringe of the San Francisco Bay region, Mount Diablo, elevation 3,849 feet, stands alone on the edge of California’s great Central Valley.

Mount Diablo State Park is one of the ecological treasures of the San Francisco Bay Area. CCC work included the Summit Museum and over ninety “Diablo Stoves” (outdoor cooking hearths).

The roads at Mount Diablo State Park are steep, narrow, and winding with tight curves. The roads are shared by vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, and animals that live in the park. There are many limited visibility and blind turns on the drive up the park’s roads.

From a distance Mount Diablo may resemble a volcano, but as exciting. Much of the core of Mount Diablo is made up of a special rock sequence/assemblage called an ophiolite. Ophiolites originate at the spreading centers of oceans and where oceanic plates collide with continental plates. On Mount Diablo, the ophiolite is dismembered.
