Nestling / fledgling visible in large hollow upright limb of eucalypt 25 metres off ground, in nature refuge rainforest. Parent birds seen flying off to hunt and seemed larger than Eastern Barn Owl, but not 100% sure of ID Masked vs Barn owl.

Feb 7, 2013 · Masked Owls seem more powerful and direct in flight, like comparing the powerful flight of a Peregrine to a Kestrel. The Barns I’ve seen are paler, like a giant ghostly moth, particularly in car headlights, and less “chunky”. In crude terms, Barns look “cute” compared to Masked, which appear “brutal”, like a Barn Owl on steroids.

Aug 19, 2016 · We scored all four Australian Tyto owl species - Masked, Sooty, Eastern Grass and Eastern Barn. As well as Marbled Frogmouth, Tawny Frogmouth, Southern Boobook and Australian Owlet-Nightjar. We had a full moon. Some have suggested owls are less active on such nights; our experience was that they are about and much easier to find as they fly about.
Tyto novaehollandiae castanops, Family Tytonidae, also known as the Tasmanian Masked Owl, is a large owl, weighing up to 1260 g, with a wingspan of up to 128 cm. Females are significantly larger and heavier than males, and considerably darker. The upperparts of this subspecies are dark brown to light chestnut in colour, with white speckling.
