Malaysia is a multi–ethnic, multicultural, and multilingual society, and the many ethnic groups in Malaysia maintain separate cultural identities. [ 5] The society of Malaysia has been described as "Asia in miniature". [ 6] The original culture of the area stemmed from its indigenous tribes, along with the Malays who moved there in ancient times.

Malaysia is an incredibly diverse country, containing many different ethnicities, languages and religions. People from each ethnicity have generally retained their ancestors’ cultural customs. As a result, Malaysian society accommodates a rich variety of lifestyles, beliefs and values.

The culture of Malaysia is diverse and a melange of influences from both the east and the west. With an eclectic population spanning various ethnic groups, Malaysia is a glorious melting pot of traditions and practices spanning generations. This, combined with western sensibilities, presents a unique juxtaposition that is a delight to experience.

Malay culture has been strongly influenced by the cultures of other areas, including Thailand, Java, and Sumatra. The influence of Hindu India was historically very great. The Malays were largely Hinduized before they were converted to Islam in the 15th century. Many Malays are rural people, living in villages rather than towns.

Within Malaysian society there is a Malay culture, a Chinese culture, an Indian culture, a Eurasian culture, along with the cultures of the indigenous groups of the peninsula and north Borneo. A unified Malaysian culture is something only emerging in the country.
