MDF vs Wood | Contractor Talk - Professional Construction and ...
Mar 15, 2010 · There was a good article in Fine Woodworking a few years back about MDF trim. Basically, it pointed out that all the edges and contours were softer and more rounded than comparable wood pieces. MDF doesn't allow crisp edges in profiles. The result is that trim pieces can look a little blurry. Kind of like 20/30 vs 20/20 vision.

Oct 7, 2008 · I have used it in the past quite a bit. I got tired of the extra work to fix a spot should the outer skin of the MDF peel or chip off. I try to use pre-primed wood or just prime the wood myself before install. Depends on the clients budget. Most of my work is in 350K homes and up. Matching existing trim in most cases so I do not find a lot of MDF.

Nov 2, 2010 · Fixall works great ,inexpensive, no smell, has adhesive, water based so it penetrates and has wood fillers, even looks like it in color. Apply Tite bond II 50:50 dilutes w. h2o, over it as a bond/sealer after it drys if it is large patch. Bondo I have had less success with. as it does not penetrate as good, and has no wood products in it.

Since when did MDF trim become more exspensive than Pine?
Jul 22, 2014 · The big boxes price MDF the same way they price anything - because people will buy it at that price, sufficiently to meet some ROI/shelf-space formula. People will buy it at that price because the wood moldings a few feet away are twisted, cupped, cracked junk. I'm lucky enough to live in a town with good millwork options, fantastic ones really.

Apr 4, 2013 · Since MDF is about one third the cost, most people would prefer it over wood in the non-moisture prone areas. Although I did see it become a problem with a lady who had six cats, they peed all over the walls ruining it. But in that case I don't think even solid wood would hold up, and the drywall had to be replaced anyway.
Is it safe to use a brad nailer in this application?
Mar 21, 2008 · It would depend on what you are using the brads for. If you want to shoot the mdf down to a 2x4 ledger you should be fine. You surely wouldn't want a framing nail or screw hear sticking out of the face of a shelf. Now if you are using the brad nail to create a shell with the 2x4 you would just be silly thinking that would hold.
filling nail holes | Contractor Talk - Professional Construction and ...
May 1, 2013 · i prefer elmers wood filler these days. its harder too sand but does not flash as much. drydex sands easier than the trim so it is really easy to slightly oversand. also i think the exposed edges of mdf right around the nail hole can absorb the moisture in waterbased paints and swell more than the drydex which probably remains stable.
