    Hall initially worked as a ventriloquist with a boy dummy, named Mickey Finn, and won a talent show aged 15. Hall created Lenny the Lion in 1954 after he visited the zoo while working at the summer season in Blackpool. Lenny was made from an old fox fur and papier-mâché, with a golf ball for the nose.

    One of Lenny’s endearing qualities was his inability to pwonounce his ‘R’s. The idea for Lenny came to Terry Hall while he was watching a particularly languid lion at Blackpool Zoo. Singer Anne Shelton (who was appearing with Hall at the time) suggested the voice, and the first puppet was made by a Madame Tussaud’s employee in 1954.
