A fast-growing evergreen shrub with a compact, multi-branching growth habit. Leaves are gray-green, three-lobed and maple-like. Saucer-shaped, hollyhock-like flowers are red-magenta on burgundy stems. Blooms from midspring to fall. Attracts butterflies.

Possibly named after a famous English race horse that was a three time winner of the Grand National Steeplechase in England. It blooms on new wood, so does well with a hard pruning in the spring before it sets buds. Blooms best in full sun, but will do well with some light shade. Lavatera x clementii 'Red Rum' was introduced in 2000.

Red Rum Tree Mallow features showy fuchsia flowers with dark red centers along the branches from late spring to early fall. The flowers are excellent for cutting. It has green deciduous foliage. The fuzzy lobed leaves do not develop any appreciable fall color.
